BIR Stainless Steel Mirror March 2009 |
|
|
April 14, 2009.
The following article is based on the latest Non-Ferrous World Mirror produced by the BIR world recycling body for the benefit of its members.
Global stainless steel production is expected to follow up a decline of 8% in 2008 with a further drop of 15-20% in the current year. Therefore, having totalled 26 million tonnes last year, world output is predicted to slide to between 21 and 22 million tonnes in 2009. Production cuts began to bite in the fourth quarter of 2008, during which period world stainless steel production struggled to just 4.2 million tonnes.
Low levels of demand for stainless steel scrap are being counter-balanced by a sharp reduction in availability, not least because of a collapse in manufacturing and demolition activity in the wake of the world economic crisis. Overall, availability is expected to drop 20-30% from the 2008 figure of approximately 7.5 million tonnes.
The value of nickel has slumped more than 70% in the past 12 months and LME stocks now exceed 100 000 tonnes. Other metal markets have suffered too: low consumption levels have driven ferro-chrome prices from US$ 2.80 per lb in October 2008 to around US$ 0.70-0.80 per lb, while molybdenum prices have plummeted from US$ 30 per lb to nearer US$ 8 per lb over the same six-month period.
